Mr Michael Power
Mr Michael Power
Student Representative
National Adult Literacy Agency (NALA)
Michael Power is the pastĀ Chairperson of the National Adult Literacy Agency. In this role MichaelĀ provided a strong, national voice for adult literacy learners having experienced first hand living with a literacy difficulty. Michael left school at 16 without Junior Certificate qualifications and worked for 20 years as a factory worker in Tipperary. His literacy difficulties became increasingly problematic as he was entrusted with more responsibilities. He joined the local literacy scheme in North Tipperary VEC to improve his literacy to better support his children in school and since then has never looked back. Michael became chairperson of NALA in 2007 and in this time he has ably represented the agency at a range of events, meetings and committees. Over the last number of years he has successfully steered NALA through a strategic planning process while maintaining the learner centred focus of the organisation.
Michael’s many attributes are also apparent from his extensive work in the local community with the Hospices Hospital Action Committee, sports clubs, fundraising and his union experience.
